Weather forecast in Cadiz on the Costa de la Luz, Andalucia
The Climate
Cadiz has a mixed climate, partly Mediterranean and partly Atlantic, with temperatures not usually rising above 34º in summer. For this reason Cadiz is a very famous national tourism destination, 80% of summer tourism in Cádiz is Spanish. Winter temperatures are usually quite moderate too, with the average yearly temperature of around 18ºc, a perfect golfing temperature! Cadiz has moderate rainfall and sometimes it snows in La Sierra de Cadiz, above 1000m. Its 3,200 hours of yearly sunshine guarantees more than 300 sunny days!
Local Winds
Cadiz or better said the Costa de la Luz has two prevailing winds, the Levante wind from the east and the Poniente wind from the west. Levante comes from the spanish word 'levantarse' which means to rise or to get up, in this case the east where the suns rises. Poniente comes from the Spanish word 'ponerse' to go down, in this case the west where the sun goes down.
The Levante wind comes over land and is therefore a strong, warm and gusty wind. Especially in summer the Levante can get up to 75 km/hour and even more towards Tarifa. It normally blows day and night. In winter the Levante isn't as strong as in summer and is our friend because it controls the humidity and makes it feel warmer and very pleasant during a round of golf.
The Poniente wind blows stronger in the afternoons and is colder because it comes from the Atlantic. The opposite counts for the Poniente, in winter this wind makes it feel colder but in summer the ponente is very pleasant and the reason for Cadiz' busy Spanish tourism.
