Here you find the Diary of the 2007 Volvo Masters:

Day 1, Thursday 1st November 2007

The honour of getting the 20th anniversary Volvo Masters underway rested appropriately with one of the nine Past Masters in the field, Irishman Ronan Rafferty, 19 years after his victory at the second Volvo Masters in 1989.

In mild and sunny conditions but with a capricious wind, it was clear from the size of the galleries on the first tee on the first morning that attendance records were set to be smashed and Valderrama was in manicured but formidable condition as two more Past Masters, Sandy Lyle (1992) and Alex Cejka (1995) followed Rafferty and the 55-strong field was underway.

Irishman Graeme McDowell, a three-under-par 68 the best of the day by one from compatriot and 2005 Volvo Masters champion Paul McGinley, "It was tough out there in the wind and Valderrama is never easy," said McDowell, adding, "I hit some nice irons and holed some decent putts."

Two off the lead in joint third place was Australian Peter O'Malley and England's Justin Rose, the latter just ahead of his Order of Merit rival Padraig Harrington on points.

Rose, unwell overnight and feeling under the weather for much of his round got off to a flying start, a hole-in-one on the short third the highlight of a battling 70, commenting afterwards, "They way I felt, I'd have bitten your hand off for one-under at the start of play."
Day 2, 2nd November 2007
Rose in the Red with Four Shot Lead

England's Justin Rose was the only player in red figures as he sat on top of the Volvo Masters leaderboard at the end of the second day's play holding a four shot lead over his Order of Merit rival, the current European number-one Padraig Harrington.

Justin Rose was right on track for his first Volvo Masters title after the only round in the sixties on day two at Valderrama, a three-under-par 68 the best of the day by two.

It was Valderrama's notorious back-nine that proved the most happy hunting ground for the 27-year-old Englishman who, despite having his best year ever has still to lift a title in 2007.

"It would be nice to cap-off a year with a bit of silverware at the end of the year and a first Volvo Masters would be fantastic," he said, adding, "I win this week, I'm number-one on the Order of Merit."

Rose came to within a few centimetres of a second successive hole-in-one at Valderrama's 181-yard third hole with what he described as, "A better tee-shot than the one that went in yesterday."

His closest rival for both crowns on offer at Valderrama, Ireland's Padraig Harrington signed second successive level-par 71 and declared himself, "Happy," with how things stand but admitted Rose may have the edge, commenting, "His scoring is very impressive."
Day 3, Saturday 3rd November 2007
As You Were at the Volvo Masters

It was a case of as-you-were going into the final round of the 20th anniversary Volvo Masters with England's Justin Rose retaining a four-shot lead over his Order of Merit rival Padraig Harrington, with England's Simon Dyson very much in the mix.

The figures may show that there was no change at the top of the 2007 Volvo Masters leaderboard but the facts behind them show it was far from straightforward for Justin Rose to maintain his four-shot lead going into Sunday's final round.

The Englishman's four-shot advantage had evaporated within the first two holes of Saturday's penultimate round, a bogey, double bogey the last thing he wanted and Harrington's birdie three at the first drew him level with the only man in the tournament who could take his Order of Merit crown away.

But Rose rallied with three birdies in four holes around the turn to draw clear again of the Irishman and he admitted to being, "A little bit shell-shocked," after his start, and added, "It was either get over it or ruin the round - I had no choice."

Kaymer described in a very understated fashion his five-under 66, the round of the week as, "A good round of golf but I left a few out there too," evoking memories of Bernhard Langer at Valderrama in his pomp.
Day 4, Sunday 4th November 2007
Rose Grows in Stature with Dramatic Volvo Masters Victory

England's Justin Rose had double cause for celebration as his Volvo Masters victory at Valderrama also confirmed the 27-year-old as the winner of the European Tour Order of Merit.

Going into the final round of the 2007 Volvo Masters with a four-shot lead, England's Justin Rose made heavy weather of winning what he later described as, "The biggest championship win of my career so far," shooting a three-over-par 74 and having to endure a dramatic sudden-death play-off to clinch the €666,660 winner's cheque.

It had looked even bleaker than that for the 27-year-old, who came home in 40, bogeying the last to force extra holes against his compatriot and playing partner Simon Dyson and Dane Søren Kjeldsen.

He had already secured the Order of Merit crown by getting into the play-off, but as he said, "It would have been a bit of a hollow feeling had I not had the Volvo Masters title to go with it."

The trio all parred the first extra hole, the 18th and all three were within 20ft of the pin on the 10th, the second play-off hole, but it was Rose who holed his putt, from 15ft to his delight and obvious relief as first Kjeldsen then Dyson missed theirs.

"I made it tough for myself out there," said Rose, admitting, "I had to dig deep, but it was worth it in the end and winning the Volvo Masters and the Order of Merit in one day is a dream come true, especially as it looked at one stage as if I may win neither."

He added, "I'd love to come back to Valderrama to defend my Volvo Masters crown next year but in the meantime, I want to savour the moment and have a rest."
