A testing afternoon on Benalup Golf
Friday, 17/10/2008
With a bit more luck than last week regarding the weather, we played the first Friday Afternoon Escape on the beautiful parkland course of Benalup. The local 'poniente' breeze kept it nice and cool during this new EGSC event which as most said afterwards is 'a great idea' and 'very nice to play together again and kick off the weekend'. Tee-times were arranged from 15:00 and onwards, which made us to go around the course on a good and proper pace of play to be able to get in the clubhouse before sunset.
Benalup's great lay-out played pretty short as always (5616 m from the yellow tees) but the difficult putting conditions, the tight fairways and testing rough didn't make it an easy day of golf, only 2 birdies have been made during the day!
Winner of the first Friday Afternoon Escape was Michael Ryan, going out with a stunning 20 points and coming back in with a steady 17 point to win with a total of 37 points! Funny enough Michael didn't make any birdies during his round so pretty consistent play from him, well done!
Runner-up was James Monro (no e!) with a very surprising round of golf. James produced a reasonable front nine with 15 points, but after boxing a long putt on the 10th (from outside the green) he got things going well for him on the back nine, coming back in with a magnificent 21 points and a descent 36 points total. With 95 shots this was James' first time to break a hundred in Spain, well done James!
